Nervous System 101

Your body is always working for you—even when it feels like it’s working against you.  At the center of it all is your nervous system. Think of it as your internal control center, constantly scanning your environment and deciding: Am I safe, or do I need to react?

There are two key states:

  • Sympathetic (fight or flight) – energized, alert, sometimes overwhelmed

  • Parasympathetic (rest and restore) – calm, steady, grounded

Neither is “bad.” The goal isn’t to eliminate stress—it’s to move smoothly between states.

When your system gets stuck in overdrive, you may notice:

  • Shallow breathing

  • Poor sleep

  • Tension or irritability

  • Brain fog

The good news? You can gently guide your body back.

Try this (2 minutes):

  • Inhale through your nose for 4

  • Exhale slowly through your mouth for 6

  • Repeat for a few rounds

That longer exhale signals safety.

This is where “Strong, Calm, Capable” begins—not by forcing calm, but by teaching your body how to return to it.

The world is chaotic enough, but our reaction can be one of calm, peace and clear headed.  If you’d like work on calming your nervous system, finding peace in the chaos of your day, sleeping better, breathing more deeply  — schedule a complimentary consultation to explore if coaching may be a good fit for you.
